How to Get Rid of Termites: A Banora Point Homeowner’s Guide

Termites are quiet. By the time you notice them, they have usually been working through your home’s timber for months. That is what makes them so costly along the Tweed Coast, where the warm, humid climate gives subterranean termites a near year-round breeding window.

If you have spotted soft skirting boards, faint clicking inside walls, or thin mud trails along your slab, you are already past the wait-and-see stage. Here is what works to get rid of termites quickly, and how to keep them gone.

Confirm It Is Actually Termites First

Before you spend money on the wrong treatment, make sure you are dealing with termites, not coastal brown ants or carpenter ants. Both are common around Banora Point and look similar at a glance.

Signs you have termites:

  • Hollow-sounding timber when you tap door frames, skirting boards, or window architraves
  • Mud tubes along the slab edge, brick piers, or inside the subfloor
  • Discarded wings near windows after warm, humid evenings (alate swarms)
  • Tight-fitting doors that suddenly will not close because the frame has warped
  • Bubbling or rippled paintwork on internal walls

If you see any of these, stop poking around. Termites flee from disturbed areas and move deeper into the structure, which makes the problem harder to locate and treat.

What Works to Get Rid of Termites

DIY termite sprays from the hardware shop will not solve a real infestation. They kill the few workers you spray and warn the rest of the colony to stay away from that area. The colony keeps eating, just from a different angle.

The two treatments that actually clear a subterranean termite problem are:

  1. Liquid soil treatment around the perimeter that creates a chemical zone the colony cannot cross without picking up a slow-acting active. Workers carry it back to the queen and the colony collapses over a few weeks.
  2. Termite baiting stations placed at intervals around the property. Workers feed on the bait, take it back, and the colony dies out the same way, often more thoroughly.

Both are jobs for a licensed termite technician, not a weekend project. Wrong placement or wrong product wastes the treatment and leaves you exposed.

Don't Skip the Termite Inspection

Whichever treatment you go with, a full property inspection comes first. Our team uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to map exactly where activity is, because spraying blind around the slab usually misses the entry point. If you would like the full picture before deciding on next steps, our termite treatment service starts with that inspection.

The inspection also catches conducive conditions you might not notice: a leaking aircon drain feeding moisture under the slab, garden mulch piled against the weatherboard, or stacked timber against the back fence acting as a free buffet.

Keeping Termites Out for Good

Once the colony is gone, the goal shifts to making your property unappealing. Three habits matter most:

  • Keep mulch, soil, and garden beds at least 75mm below the weep holes in your brickwork
  • Fix dripping taps, leaking gutters, and condensation pooling under split-system units within a week of noticing them
  • Book an annual termite inspection if your home is older than ten years or sits in a high-risk pocket near the river

Annual inspections are not a sales upsell. The Australian Standard recommends them precisely because termites in this climate can establish a new colony in twelve months.

When to Call a Termite Pro

If you have found mud tubes, swarmers, or hollow-sounding timber today, the situation is urgent. Termites do not pause while you research. The damage compounds every week the colony stays active.

Trae and the team treat termite jobs across Banora Point, Tweed Heads, Kingscliff, and the Northern Rivers, with same-day inspections available most weeks. Eco-friendly products keep your family and pets safe during and after treatment.
