TSD Pest Control

Say goodbye to unwanted pests with our trusted, non-toxic methods, endorsed by countless Tweed Heads, Banora Point and NSW Northern Rivers residents

How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes

Few things spoil a warm Northern Rivers evening faster than mosquitoes. Around Banora Point and Tweed Heads the humid, subtropical climate gives them plenty of chances to breed, and a single neglected bucket of water can produce hundreds of them. The trick to getting rid of mosquitoes is to think less about the ones buzzing around you and more about where the next generation is hatching.

Here is how to bring the numbers down and take your backyard back.

Remove the Standing Water

Mosquitoes need still water to breed, and they do not need much of it. A bottle cap is enough for some species. Once a week, walk your yard and tip out or clear anything holding water:

  • Pot plant saucers, buckets and old tyres
  • Blocked gutters and downpipes
  • Tarps, toys and wheelbarrows that collect rain
  • Bird baths and pet bowls, refreshed every few days

This one habit does more to cut mosquito numbers than anything you can spray.

Make the Yard Less Welcoming

Beyond water, mosquitoes rest in cool, shaded growth during the day. Keep the lawn mown, trim dense shrubs and clear leaf litter so there are fewer places to shelter. If you have a pond or water feature you want to keep, adding movement with a pump, or keeping fish that eat larvae, both help.

Protect Yourself Outdoors

While you work on the source, a few simple steps make evenings more comfortable. Wear long, loose clothing at dusk, use a repellent containing an approved active such as picaridin or DEET, and fit or repair fly screens on doors and windows. A fan on the patio also helps, since mosquitoes are weak fliers.

When to Call in Local Help

If you have cleared the water and the mosquitoes are still relentless, the breeding source may be beyond your fence, in shared drains, bushland or a neighbouring yard. A local mosquito control service can treat the resting and breeding areas around your property and bring lasting relief that spot fixes cannot.
